GROUND SQUARED

The subtitle for this project borrows a line from Victor Hugo, evocatively describing the Renaissance as A Sunset that is Confused for the Dawn. The project also explores Donald Judd’s reframing of sculpture as material, light, and space, and his argument that specific objects are spatial markers that create space. In this project, reflective platforms of various heights are arrayed on the beach as part of the Winter Stations exhibition. The structure of these plinths are rendered almost invisible, to give the impression of abstract, floating masses. At the same time, the project is inhabitable, becoming a fragmented ground, furniture, and reflective and interactive landscape, a series of playful plateaux.
