ILLUSORY, WINTER STATIONS

Using the inherent atmospheric characteristics of the Beach neighbouhood in Toronto, this project seeks to create an engaging social space in the winter. The Illusory is constructed of a series of 2" x 12" wooden panels. These panels enclose the lifeguard stand while using it as an anchor to help secure the entire structure. Twenty panels wrap around the centre on each side, descending at 5" increments. The tallest panel stands at 9' and the shortest down to 2'. They are connected to a base frame which is anchored to the sand and buried underground. The five tallest panels on each side have additional stabilizers running through the top connected to panels attached to the lifeguard stand. A chrome vinyl wrap finishes the surface of each panel to achieve maximum reflectivity, creating the appearance of a mirror and blending the structure with its surroundings when gazed at from a distance.
